Sentry inspects a file on your device for common malware indicators — a program disguised as a document, an embedded executable, Office macros, risky PDF actions, or obfuscated script. It reports what it finds; it is not a full antivirus and can't guarantee a file is safe. As a second opinion you can check the file's SHA-256 hash against VirusTotal's 70+ engines — only the hash is sent, never the file, and only when you choose to.
A clean result means Sentry found no known indicators — it does not prove the file is safe, and a flagged result does not always mean the file is malicious (macros and scripts have legitimate uses). Heuristics run on the file's bytes locally; for anything you truly distrust, do not open it, and check the hash on VirusTotal or use a dedicated antivirus. Sentry never uploads your file.
